Sim Racing Wheelbases

A wheelbase is the engine of your sim racing setup — the part that attaches to your cockpit and sends force feedback (resistance and vibrations) through the steering wheel. Wheelbases come in three types: Direct Drive (motor directly on the wheel axle), Belt Drive (belt-driven), and Gear Drive (gear-driven). Direct drive provides the most precise and lifelike feedback.

Direct Drive — the motor is directly connected to the wheel shaft. Fastest response, most precise feedback, no mechanical noise. Best choice for serious sim racers. Asetek and MOZA are both direct drive.

Belt Drive — power is transmitted via belts. More dampened and smoother feedback. Good for beginners not used to high force feedback.

Gear Drive — gears transmit power. Typically more mechanical noise. Rarely used in modern bases.

Nm (Newton-meter) indicates the maximum force from the wheelbase's motor. As a rule of thumb:

Under 5 Nm — casual gaming and family setup.
5–10 Nm — good introduction to direct drive, Asetek Initium (8 Nm) is perfect here.
10–16 Nm — serious sim racing, detailed feedback from track and tires.
Over 16 Nm — advanced sim racing, motorsport-realistic feedback.

We recommend a minimum of 8 Nm for new sim racers who want to feel a difference from belt drive.

MOZA R5, R9 V2, R12, and R16 support PlayStation 5 via a separate adapter. The MOZA R3 supports PS5 directly out of the box (USB-C connection). Asetek Racing wheelbases are currently only PC-compatible.
