A little more slippery than suede with intensive use.Rubber/Polyurethane — cheapest option, robust and easy to clean. Primarily used on entry-level wheels.

A sim racing wheel is your primary interface with the car — it's where you feel the force feedback from the wheelbase's motor, and it's where your precision is determined. A good wheel combines ergonomics, materials, and design to give you the best feeling of the car.

GT Wheel vs. Formula Wheel

GT Wheel (round, 280–320 mm) — the most popular choice. Broad compatibility with all racing genres. Suede grip, flat D-shape, and integrated buttons provide that professional feel.

Formula Wheel (square, 260–280 mm) — open design with buttons and paddles at the front. Ideal for single-seater racing and Formula simulators.

Quick Release — connect wheel and base across brands

A QR coupling (Quick Release) sits between the wheel and the wheelbase, allowing you to change wheels in seconds. Asetek Racing's QR system is designed for direct mounting on Asetek bases — and with the right adapter, you can also mount wheels from other brands on your Asetek base, or Asetek wheels on other bases. This gives you full flexibility to build your perfect setup.

It depends on the quick release system. Most modern wheelbases use a specific QR system:

Asetek Racing — THORP QR system. Asetek wheels mount directly. Other wheels require an adapter.
MOZA — Moza QR system. MOZA wheels mount directly. Adapter available for Fanatec and other brands.
Fanatec — ClubSport QR. Wide compatibility with third-party wheels via Fanatec hub.

A Quick Release (QR) is the adapter that connects your steering wheel to the wheelbase axle. It allows you to change steering wheels in seconds without tools — practical if you race multiple genres and want to switch between GT and Formula wheels.

Asetek Racing bases and steering wheels are designed to connect directly via Asetek's own QR system. With the right adapter, you can also mount steering wheels from other brands on an Asetek base — and vice versa. MOZA uses Moza's own QR system. Most sim racers prefer 280–300mm for GT racing — this is equivalent to a real-world motorsport diameter. Larger wheels (310–330mm) provide more control at low speeds and for rallying. Smaller wheels (260–280mm) are used for Formula racing.

Remember: in sim racing, you don't have the same limitations as in real cars — you don't have to fight gravity. Most people choose smaller wheels than they would use in a real car.
